Body Cavities And Divisions Flashcards
Cranial cavity
Back of body, including brain and pituitary gland (attached to hypothalamus)
Crani/o=skull
Thoracic cavity
Front of body, including: lungs, heart, trachea(wind pipe), esophagus(food pipe), aorta.
Thorac/o= chest
Thoracic cavity is subdivided into what two cavities?
Pleural cavity and mediastinum cavity
Pleural cavity
Fluid-filled space between membranes, surround each lung
Mediastinum cavity
Space between the lungs. Contains heart, aorta, trachea, and esophagus.
Diaphragm
Muscular layer, separates thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity
Abdominal cavity
Front of body (periton/eal). Surrounded by membrane called peritoneum. Contains: stomach, sm and lg intestines, spleen, liver, gallbladder, pancreas.
Abdominal cavity: kidneys
Kidneys are retroperitoneal- they align with the abdominal organs but are outside the peritoneal membrane.

Pelv/o= hip
Spinal cavity
Back of body. Contains the spinal cord and spinal fluid.
Spin/o= backbone

Spinal column: thoracic
12 vertebrae: T1-T12
Spinal column: lumbar
5 vertebrae: L1-L5
Spinal column: sacral
5 vertebrae fused after birth to form 1 bone. Child S1-S5. Adult only one bone called the sacrum.
Spinal column: coccygeal
4 fused vertebrae before birth to form one small bone called the tailbone.
