Body Cavities Flashcards
Dorsal Body Cavity
Protects the nervous system. Contains the cranial cavity and vertebral cavity
Ventral Body Cavity
Houses internal organs. Two subdivisions, Thoracic and Abdominopelvic cavities, separated by the diaphragm
Cranial Cavity
Protects the brain, subdivision of the dorsal cavity
Vertebral Cavity
Protects the spinal cord, subdivision of the dorsal cavity
Thoracic Cavity
Contains the heart and lungs. Made up of pericardial cavity, pleural cavities x2, and mediastinum.
Part of the Ventral cavity
Abdominopelvic cavity
Contains the Abdominal and Pelvic cavities.
Part of the Ventral cavity
Abdominal Cavity
Contains stomach, intestines,spleen and liver.
Part of the Abdominopelvic cavity, which is part of the ventral cavity.
Pelvic Cavity
Contains bladder, reproductive organs and rectum.
Part of the Abdominopelvic cavity, which is part of the ventral cavity.
Pleural Cavities
Each one surrounds one lung.
Part of the Thoracic cavity, which is in the ventral cavity.
Mediastinum
Contains the pericardial cavity and surrounds other thoracic organs, etc oesophagus, trachea.
In the Thoracic Cavity, which is in the Ventral Cavity
Pericardial Cavity
Encloses the heart.
In the Mediastinum cavity, which is in the thoracic cavity, which is in the ventral cavity.
Serosa (the serous membrane)
Thin double-layered membranes that cover surfaces in the ventral body cavity.
Parietal serosa lines internal body cavity wals, Visceral serosa covers internal organs. Layers separated by a small cavity filled with serous fluid. Fluid secreted by both membranes.
Parietal Membrane (serosa)
Part of double membrane, outer side that lines internal body cavity walls
Visceral Membrane (serosa)
Part of double membrane, inner side that covers internal organs.
Pericardium
The membrane around the heart, made up of Parietal and Visceral Membranes and filled with serous fluid.
