Anatomical Landmarking Flashcards
Medial
Toward or at the midline of the body, on the inner side
eg. the heart is medial to the arm
Lateral
Away from the midline of the body, on the outer side
eg. the arm is lateral to the chest
Intermediate
Between a more medial and more lateral structure
eg. the collarbone is intermediate between the breastbone and shoulder
Proximal
Closer to the origin of the body part, or the attachment point to the trunk
eg. the elbow is proximal to the wrist
Distal
Further from the origin of the body part, or the attachment point to the trunk
eg. the knee is distal to the thigh
Superficial
Towards or at the body surface
Deep
Away from the body surface
Axial Division
Includes the head, neck and trunk
Appendicular Division
Includes limbs
Sagittal plane
Divides body vertically into right and left parts. Produces a sagittal section
Frontal (coronal) Plane
Divides body vertically into anterior and posterior parts (front and back).
Produces a frontal or coronal section
Transverse (horizontal) plane
Divides the body horizontally into superior and inferior parts (top and bottom)
Produces a cross section
Midsagittal (median) plane
Sagittal cut made perfectly on the midline
Parasagittal plane
Sagittal cut off-centred
Oblique section
Result of cuts at an angle other than 90degrees to the vertical plane
