Body Cavities Flashcards
Dorsal Cavity
contains the cranial and the vertebral (or spinal) cavities
Cranial Cavity
the inside surface of the base of the skull, providing a stable platform for the brain
Spinal Cavity
an anatomical space formed by the vertebral column that stores an integral portion of the central nervous system
Ventral Cavity
includes the thoracic cavity and the abdominopelvic cavity
Thoracic Cavity
The chest cavity
Pericardium Cavity
A sac-like space that contains the heart and the roots of the great vessels.
Contains: an outer fibrous layer and an inner serous layer
Pleural Cavity
a body cavity that extends between the lungs and the chest wall on both sides of the chest, and from the mediastinum in the upper chest to the diaphragm
Abdominopelvic Cavity (Name all it contains)
houses all of your organs other than your brain, heart, and lungs
liver, gallbladder, kidneys, spleen, pancreas, stomach, small intestines, large intestines, bladder, and internal reproductive organs
Abdominal Cavity (Name what it includes)
the space between the abdominal wall and the spine
stomach, small intestine, colon, rectum, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, and bladder
Retroperitoneal Cavity (And what it includes)
a wide area of the abdominal cavity that extends from the diaphragm to the pelvis
kidneys, ureters, adrenal glands, lymph nodes, and major blood vessels.
Intraperioneal Cavity
a closed space in the abdomen of animals that contains the abdominal organs and is lined by the peritoneum
Pelvic Cavity (And the four bones that make it up)
a box-like structure that protects and surrounds the reproductive, urinary, and intestinal tracts
the ilium, ischium, pubis, and sacrum
Diaphragm
a muscular partition that separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity
