Anatomical Planes and Directional Terms Flashcards
Sagittal Plane
The body plane that splits the body into left and right halves.
Transverse Plane
Separated the body into cranial and caudal parts.
Dorsal Plane
Separates the body into a ventral half and a dorsal half.
Ventral/ Dorsal
Ventral is belly side and Dorsal is back side
Caudal/Cranial/Rostral
Rostral is toward the nose while the Cranial is toward the back of the head.
Cranial is toward the head while the caudal is toward the tail.
Medial/ Lateral
lateral orientation is a position away from the midline of the body.
medial is closer to the midline of the body.
Proximal/ Distal
Proximal is closest to the axial body while distal is furthest.
Superficial/ Deep
Superficial is to the surface of the body while deep is away from the body surface.
Dorsal
The top part of the limbs
Palmar
The dorsal and palmar regions are in the upper limb.
Dorsal is top, palmar is underside
Plantar
The dorsal and plantar regions are in the hind limb.
Dorsal is top, plantar is underside
Bilateral
Pertaining to both sides of the body
Unilateral
Pertaining to one side of the body
Contralateral
Of or pertaining to the other side
Ipsilateral
Of or pertaining to the same side
