Body Cavities Flashcards
Dorsal Cavity
Consists of the Cranial cavity and Vertebral cavity. The dorsal cavity is protected by 3 protective membranes: Dura Mater, arachnoid, and pia mater.
Ventral Cavity
The ventral body cavity is the larger of the two cavities and is subdivided into two smaller cavities: the thoracic cavity and the abdominopelvic cavity. These two cavities are separated by the diaphragm, a thick, transverse muscle of respiration.
Ventral cavity has 3 serous membranes that are filled with water and mucous fluid that lubes organs: Pleura, Pericardium, and Peritoneum.
Thoracic Cavity
The thoracic cavity sits in your chest and sits superior to the diaphragm. Within the thoracic cavity there are three smaller cavities: two pleural cavities contain the lung and lie on the right and left side of the thorax, and the pericardial cavity which is situated between the pleural cavities and contains the heart.
Abdominopelvic Cavity
The abdominopelvic cavity is located inferior to the diaphragm is further subdivided into the abdominal cavity superiorly which contains the liver, spleen, stomach, kidneys, and much of the intestines, and the pelvic cavity inferiorly which contains the urinary bladder, rectum, and reproductive organs.
Dura Mater
The tough outermost membrane enveloping the brain and spinal cord.
Arachnoid Membrane
A thin layer that lays between the duramater and piamater. The arachnoid membranes are projections of connective tissue in the subarachnoid space that connect the arachnoid mater to the pia mater.
Pia mater Membrane
The innermost layer, it is a thin layer that’s held tightly — like shrink wrap — to the surface of your brain and spinal cord. The pia mater is the only layer that clings tightly to the brain and follows all of its convolutions.
Pleura Membrane
The pleura is a thin, serous membrane that lines the chest cavity and surrounds each lung.
Pericardium Membrane
The pericardium is a fibrous sac that surrounds the heart and major blood vessels.
Peritoneum Membrane
The peritoneum is a smooth, transparent membrane that lines the abdominal cavity and contains the organs of the abdomen and pelvis.
