Boat Characteristics Flashcards
What are the two types of keels?
- Bar
- Flat plate
What are the three types of hulls?
- Displacement
- Planing
- Semi displacement
What is the purpose of the keel?
The keel is the backbone of the boat, runs fore and aft along the center bottom of the boat
What are the three integral parts of the keel?
- Frames
- Stem
- Sternpost
What is a displacement hull?
A displacement hull boat pushes away water allowing the hull to settle down into the water
What is a planing hull?
Similar to a displacement hull, but it skims along the surface of the water
What is a semi-displacement hull?
Is a combination of characteristics of the displacement hull and planing hull.
How are doors and hatches made watertight?
- It is sealed into a raised framework (coaming)
- Rubber gaskets
- Must be securely dogged
What is light displacement?
The weight of the boat excluding fuel, water, outfit, cargo, crew, and passengers
What is loaded displacement?
The weight of the boat including fuel, water, outfit, cargo, crew, and passengers
What is center of gravity?
The point at which the weight of the boat acts vertically downwards
What is buoyancy?
The upward force of water displaced by the hull
What are the two types of forces?
- Static
- Dynamic
What is a static force?
Caused by placement of weight within the hull
What is a dynamic force?
Caused by actions outside the hull such as winds and waves
What is the shank of the anchor?
Aids in setting and weighing the anchor, attachment point for the anchor line
What are the flukes of the anchor?
Dig in the bottom and bury the anchor, providing holding power
What is the crown of the anchor?
Lifts the read of the flukes, and forces the flukes into the bottom
What is the stock of the anchor?
Prevents the anchor from rolling or rotating
What is displacement?
The weight of the boat and is measured in long tons (2,240 lbs)
What is deadweight?
The difference between the light displacement and the maximum loaded displacement of a boat
What are the types of natural line?
- Manila
- Hemp
- Cotton
- Sisal
What are the types of synthetic line?
- Nylon
- Polyethylene
- Polypropylene
- Polyester
How is line size categorized?
Small stuff: Up to 1.5” in circumference
Line: 1.5” to 5” in circumference
Hawser: Everything over 5” in circumference
What is the only line used for towlines on Coast Guard boats?
Double-braided nylon
