Located near or at the stern of the boat

24
Q

Beam

A

The width of a boat at the widest point

25
Bilge
The lowest point of a boat's interior hull
26
Draft
The vertical distance from the waterline to the lowest point of the keel; the minimum depth of water in which a vessel will float
27
forward
Located near, or at, the bow of the boat
28
Freeboard
The vertical distance from the waterline to the gunwale
29
Keel
The main structural member of a boat comprising its backbone plus the lateral area beneath the hull, helping to provide stability and reduce the sideways drift or a boat
30
Wake
The disturbed column of water around and behind a moving vessel which is set into motion by the passage of a vessel
31
Waterline
The intersection of a boat's hull and the water's surface
32
Boat hull (body of a boat)
Displacement hulls allow larger boat to move through the water smoothly
33
Planning hulls are...
designed to rise up on top of water at higher speeds for small boats
34
hull type: flat bottom
fishing, slow speeds and calm water
35
hull type: round bottom
canoes moves smoothly with little effort must be cautions when loading/entering/existing because they roll easily
36
hull type: Deep v- hull
Most cowwom type of powerboats moves smoothly in rough water at high speed required a larger engine than other boats
37
hull type: multi hull
most stable type require. lot of room for steern and turn catamarans and pontons
38
engine types:
outboard, inboard and sterndrives
39
outboard engine
mounted outisde of the boat steered or controlled by a hand tiller or steering wheel that will cause the entire engine to move when steering is adjusted
40
inboard engine
typically four-stroke automative engines which are modified for use on the water mounted insde the hull of the boats powers the drive shaft which is connected to a propeller when the steering wheel of an inboard engine is manipulated, it moves a rudder tht is positioned directly behind the propeller
41
sterndrives
called: - similar to inboards: - - - drive use four-stroke automative engines modified for use of the water - - - mounted inside the boat, - - - attached through the transom - - - they power the drive shaft, which is connected to the propeller - - - when the steering wheel used to control the stern drive engine is adjusted... it changes the direction of the propeller - have a four-stroke engine?
42
outboards and two-stroke engines and four-stroke engines
before: - typically was two-stroke two-stroke: - oil mixed with gasoline to lubricate the engine four-stroke: - oil and gasoline are seperate - more quietly and smoothly more environnmentally friendly: - - - - more smokeless
43
What is a compliance notice
plesure crafts under 24m in length that are motorized must have a compliance notice vessel less than 6m in length: compliance indicates the maximim gross load to be carried (including weight of people, fuel, equiment) - - - must indicate the maximum safe limits for motor power for the hull
44
What is a pleasure craft license?
set of identiciation number to be displayed on both sides of your boat's bow all personal watercrafts must be licensed, register with transport canada license must be onboard and available, no fees to obstain a pleasure craft license
45
Hull identification number
all pleasure craft must be parked with a hull identifcation number (12-character serial number to identify lost or stolen vessels) illegal to alter or tamper a HIN
