What is OCD?
an anxiety disorder characterised by persistent, recurrent unpleasant thoughts and repetitive ritualistic behaviours
What are obsessions?
recurrent, persistent thoughts
What are compulsions?
what people do as a result of obsessions.
Aim to reduce distress or prevent feared events, even though there’s little chance o them doing so
What conditions do the symptoms of OCD overlap with?
Tourette’s Syndrome and Autism
has led some to question whether OCD really exists as a separate disorder
What are behavioural symptoms of obsessions?
hinder everyday functioning
social impairment
What are emotional symptoms of obsessions?
extreme anxiety
What are cognitive symptoms of obsessions?
recurrent and persistent thoughts
recognised as self-generated
realisation of inappropriateness
attention bias
What is attention bias?
perception tends to be focused on anxiety-generating stimuli
What are behavioural symptoms of compulsions?
repetitive
hinder everyday functioning
social impairment
What are emotional symptoms of compulsions?
distress
What are cognitive symptoms of compulsions?
uncontrollable urges
