What is depression?
a mood disorder characterised by feelings of despondency and hopelessness
About how many people suffer from depression?
20 per cent, with women (aged mid to late adolescence) twice as vulnerable as men.
What are depressive ‘episodes’?
depression can occur in cycles, symptoms coming and going over time, generally lasting between 2-6 months
Why does depression have a higher morbidity rate?
there’s a high suicide rate, 10 per cent of severely depressed people commit suicide and 60 per cent of all suicides are related to mood disorders
What must be displayed to diagnosed with major depression?
one of five symptoms must be a constant depressed mood or lessened interest in daily activities
How can you distinguish between major depression and dysthymic depression?
the difference being in the duration, type and number of symptoms. Dysthymic depression have three or more symptoms instead of 5
What are the two types of depression?
unipolar depression and bipolar depression
What is unipolar depression
a form of depression occurring without mania with its sufferers only experiencing depression and not the manic episodes.
What is bipolar depression ?
a form of depression characterised by periods of heightened moods and periods of despondency and hopelessness

loss of energy
social impairment

What are emotional symptoms of depression?
loss of enthusiasm
constant depressed mood
worthlessness
What are cognitive symptoms of depression?
delusions
reduced concentration
thoughts of death
poor memory
What are delusions?
generally concerning guilt, punishment, personal inadequacy or disease or even hallucinations
What are behavioural symptoms of bipolar?
high energy levels
reckless behaviour
talkative
What are emotional symptoms of bipolar?
elevated mood states
irritability
lack of guilt
