pts have lost all awareness and cognitive function but may remain w/ their eyes open, exhibit sleep-wake cycles and maintain respiration/ANS functions

A
pt is awake and intact cognitively, with no abnormality of consciousness however a large lesion at the base of the pons has left them unable to move extremities and most of face

criteria for brain death
A
- pt must be comatose
- absent brainstem reflexes
- no spontaneous respirations even when PCO2 is high (apnea test)

acute confusional state
A
sometimes called encephalopathy or delirium; characterized by an inability to carry out a coherent plan of thought or action; primarily the result of a core problem with attention
