What Interventions are used for a patient taking allopurinol for gout?

A
  • Increase fluid intake to prevent kidney stones
  • increase movement
  • avoid caffeine, alcohol, and dairy
  • may take several weeks to work
  • stop if rash develops.
  • NO HIGH PURINE FOODS (organ meats, shellfish, fructose)
  • avoid starting/ increasing med during active flare ups
  • bone marrow depression
