describe the process of BLS for an adult
check for danger check for response no response - call for help assess signs of life ie open airway with chin lift or head tilt, rise and fall of chest palpate carotid pulse should last no longer than 10 seconds no signs on life - crash trolley 2222 CPR
how do you check for an initial response during BLS
shake shoulders or speak loudly in ear
if a response what should you do to the patient
put in recovery position
if there is a risk of spinal injury especially as C level what should you do
jaw thrust to open airway
if patient is breathing normally with a pulse what are the next steps
assess with ABCDE
give oxygen and insert cannula
describe how to give CPR to an adult
30 compressions / 2 breaths rate of 100-120 per min depth 5-6 cm arms locked and in centre of chest keep weight evenly over patient slow delivered breaths over 1 second
what does AED stand for
automated external defibrillator
when should you put someone in the recovery position
patient in breathing but unconscious - prevent them from choking
how do you put someone in the recovery position
remove jewellery and items from pockets
kneel and straighten patients limbs on back
place arm nearest to you at right angle of body w/ elbow bent and palm up
bring arm furthest away across and hold back of hand against their cheek closest you
put furthest away knee bent up with foot on the ground
roll the towards you
tilt head up and back and check breathing at regular intervals
