What are the steps for adult CPR with AED?
1) Tap and shout
2) Shout for help and send someone to phone 911 and get an AED
3) Look for no breathing (or only gasping)
4) 30 compressions and 2 breaths
5) When the AED arrives, turn it on and follow the prompts
What are signs of choking in a child or adult?
- Makes the choking sign
- Cannot breath, cough, speak or make sounds
How can you verify if a child or adult is choking?
- Ask, “Are you choking?”
- If they are, tell them you are going to help
If a child is choking, you give thrusts slightly above the belly button until what three signs? (3)
1) Object is forced out
2) Child can breathe and make sounds
3) Child stops responding
What are the steps if a child or adult stops responding after providing thrusts due to choking?
1) Yell for help
2) Check breathing
3) 30 compressions and 2 breaths (checking the mouth for objects after each set of compressions)
4) After 5 sets, phone 911 and get an AED
5) Continue CPR until the child responds or EMS takes over
What is the function of a head tilt chin-lift?
Used to open the airway of an unconscious person
What is the function of a jaw thrust?
Opens the airway when a spinal injury is suspected
What are signs of choking in an infant?
- Cannot breathe or make a sound
- Has a cough that has no sound
How do you remove an airway obstructed object in an infant?
1) Give up to 5 back slaps
2) If the object does not come out, turn the infant onto their back and give 5 chest thrusts
When do you stop back slaps and chest thrusts in a choking infant?
Until the infant can breathe, cough or cry or until they stop responding
What are the steps if an infant stops responding after providing thrusts due to choking?

What is the age definition of a child?
1 to puberty
What is the age definition of an infant?
Less than 1 year, excluding newborns
What are the three recognition signs of cardiac arrest?
1) Unresponsive
2) No breathing or only gasping
3) No definite pulse felt within 10 seconds
