Blood Vessels That Supply The Brain Flashcards
4 Major Blood Vessels
2 Vertebral
2 Internal carotid
Vertebral Arteries
Pass through transverse foramen of vertebrae
Enter brain with spinal cord through foramen magnum
Internal Carotid Arteries
Enter skull through own opening within base of skull
Come halfway up carotid canal, then halfway up foramen lacerum
Middle Cerebral Artery
Supplies many deep structures and lateral aspect of cerebrum
Breaks up into several large branches
Anterior Cerebral Artery
Around genu of corpus callosum to supply anterior frontal lobe and medial aspect of hemisphere
Posterior Cerebral Artery
Curves around brain stem
Supply mainly occipital lobe, choroid plexus of 3rd and lateral ventricles and lower surface of temporal lobe
Stroke affecting MCA
Weakness and sensory loss in contralateral face and arm
Stroke affecting ACA
Weakness in contralateral leg
Cerebral Veins
Have no valves and seldom accompany corresponding cerebral arteries
Venous Drainage
Includes veins of brain, dural venous sinuses, dura’s meningeal veins and diploid veins
Sphenoparietal Sinus
Drains deep middle cerebral vein into cavernous sinus
Cavernous Sinus
Either side of sella turcica
Receives drainage from multiple sources (ophthalmic/facial vein)
Blood from Cavernous Sinus
Leaves via superior/inferior petrosal sinuses (drain into beginning and end of sigmoid dural sinus)
