Blood vessels and blood pressure Flashcards
Where does deoxygenated blood enter the heart?
Inferior/superior vena cava
What are the smallest blood vessels called?
Capillaries
What are is the role of arteries?
Distribution
Control where flow of blood is distributed through around the body
What is the role of arterioles?
Resistance two flow
Contract to make blood vessels narrower where it can control volumes of blood regarding requirements
What are the role of capillaries?
Exchange
Thin, single cell wall which is permeable to allow diffusion to occur to allow oxygen and nutrients to be transported and absorbed as well as disregarding waste products
What are the role of veins?
Capacitance
Depending on volume, and requirement of blood flow. They are flexible and able to accommodate different volumes of blood.
Why do veins have valves and arteries don’t?
Because veins are moving blood against gravity at low pressure towards the heart meaning that valves are needed to prevent the backflow of blood where as, arteries are working with gravity to transport blood away from the heart at high pressure meaning valves are not needed.
What is the equation for cardiac output?
CO= HR X SV
What is cardiac output?
Amount of blood ejected out of the heart per minute
What is meant by stroke volume?
Volume of blood put out by left ventricle in one contraction
What is cardiac output measured in?
ml/min
What is stroke volume measures in?
ml/beat
What is meant by systemic vascular resistance? (SVR)
resistance to blood flow
offered by all of the systemic
vasculature
What does MAP stand for? And what does it mean?
Mean arterial pressure
Mean pressure in an artery during one cardiac cyle
How to workout pulse pressure?
Systolic Pressure - Diastolic pressure = pulse pressure
