Blood Vessels Flashcards
Blood Vessels - 3 types
- Arteries
- Veins
- Capillaries
- Arteries
Thick muscular walls
Small lumen (tiny hole)
Small passageway for blood
Contains blood under high pressure
- Veins
Thin / narrow walls
Large lumen ( bigger hole)
Large passageway for blood
Contains blood under low pressure
Have valves to prevent blood flowing backwards
Valves are needed in the veins because the blood flows at low pressure (speed) the blood could easily move backwards
- Capillaries
Microscopic – 1 cell thick ( very thin)
Allows blood to pass through one cell at a time
Found in the muscle / lungs
Contains blood under very low pressure
Semipermeable membrane allowing gas / nutrients in and out of the blood
Where gas exchange occurs
- oxygen travels from the capillary walls into the tissues
- carbon dioxide travels into the capillary wall from the tissues
Lumen
the inside space of tubular structure (blood vessels / intestines)
Semipermeable
allowing certain substances to pass through but not others
Arteriole
Small artery
Venule
Small vein
Blood travelling through the capillaries
Vein- Venule - Capillaries- Arteriole- Artery
Tunica Intima
The 1st layer of the blood vessel
Intima – think intimate
The inner coating of the blood vessel
Tunica Media
The 2nd layer of the blood vessel
Media – think middle
Tunica Externa
The 3rd layer of the blood vessel
Externa – think external
The last coating of the blood vessel
Tunica
Tunica – think about tunic a covering of something
