Blood Vessels Flashcards
Blood vessels
Carry blood from the heart to the organs of the body and back to the heart
Lumen
The space within the blood vessel
Artery
Vessels composed of smooth muscle and elastic fibers that carry blood AWAY from the heart
Arterioles
Small arteries of microcirculation created by the branching of arteries
Capillaries
Microscopic connections between arterioles and venules. Very thin walls
Venules
Small veins of microcirculation formed by the junction of several capillaries
Vein

Valves
Allow for the flow of blood in veins to move in one direction to prevent backflow.
