Blood Vessels Flashcards
What are our blood vessels made of?
3 layers called tunicas surrounding an open area called lumen
Tunica adventitia
-outer layer
-made of strong connective tissue
-thicker than veins
Tunica Media
-middle layer
-mostly smooth muscle
-thicker than arteries
-smooth muscles control dilation and constriction
Tunica intima
-layer next to the lumen
-has smooth endothelium made of epithelial cells tightly packed for protection
Arteries
-carry blood away from the heart
Elastic arteries
-the includes the aorta
-can absorb pressure from blood being pumped and even the out flow.
Arterioles
-smaller blood vessels that branch off from muscular arteries
-get smaller and smaller until they become capillaries
Capillaries
-very thin walls (only a cell thick)
-this allows for exchange of oxygen and nutrients
Venules
-returning blood is brought through venules
-become larger and larger until they become veins
What are vein valves made of and what do they do?
-modified connective tissue
-helps keep the blood from flowing backward
What has oxygenated blood?
pulmonary vein coming back to the left atrium from the lungs
