Blood Elements and their Functions Flashcards
Erythrocytes
-RBC’s
-Majority of formed elements
-as they mature, they make room for hemoglobin
Hemoglobin
protein with heme or iron group
-each hemoglobin carries 4 molecules of oxygen
-CO2 is transported on the globin end
Leukocytes
-WBC’s
-apart of immune system
-classified into 2: granulocytes, agranulocytes
Granulocytes
irregular lobed nucleus with granules in cytoplasm
Neutrophil - Granulocyte
-make up most of WBC’s
-use phagocytosis to engulf
-use lysozymes to destroy
Eosinophils - Granulocyte
-phagocytosis
-mostly with allergies and parasites
Basophils - Granulocytes
-release histamine (inflammatory) in response to tissue damage, pathogens, and allergens
Agranulocyte
no visible cytoplasm granules, round nucleus
Lymphocytes - Agranulocyte
-main cells in specific or adaptive immune response
-B and T cells move between blood, lymph, and tissues to protect body
Monocytes - Agranulocytes
-macrophage
-essential part of B cell production
Platelets (thrombocytes)
-become sticky and bind with fibrin to stop bleeding
-no nucleus
-made from cell fragments called megakaryocytes
