Who can administer the Blood Transfusion?
The RN.
What is the only solution compatible with Blood products?
Normal Saline.
All Blood products require a what?
A filter to remove clots, platelets, and WBCs.
Steps of administration of Blood Transfusion
- Insert IV line using 16, 18, or 20 g IV needle.
- Run it with NS. Blood is transfused with special Y- tubing with inline filter.
- Begin transfusion slowly.
A. RN bedside for first 15 MINUTES
B. After 15 minutes the flow can increase.
C. VS are monitored every 30 min to Hour. - Dispose Transfusion bag in red biohazard bag
- Document the PT tolerance to the administration of Blood product.
A type and screen and crossmatch are good for ?
72 hours.
Blood must be started within from the time the blood is picked up from the blood bank.
30 minutes.
All blood must be transfused within hours.
4 hours from the time it was started.

Adverse reaction that happens as a result of receiving a blood transfusion.
S/S of Transfusion Reaction
HR Increased
BP Down
Temperature Up
Itching, urticaria, skin rash
Wheezing, tachypnea, and dyspnea
Anxiety
Flushing
Back Pain
Nursing Considerations of Transfusion Reaction
Stop the transfusion
Change the IV tubing
Keep IV open with NS
Notify the HCP and blood bank
Do Not leave the PT alone
