Blood Transfusion Flashcards
Recall the major blood groups
A
B
AB
O
What is a blood cell antigen made up of?
Sugar and stem (glycoprotein + fructose)
Recall the glycoprotein in the A and B antigen genes
A - N-acetyl glycosamine
B - galactose
What % of the population are RhD positive?
85%
What genotypes are RhD positive?
Dd and DD
Recall the pathophysiology of haemolytic disease of the newborn
RhD negative mother has RhD positive baby = allergic reaction
Which immunoglobin has Ab against every non-self erythrocyte?
IgM
How can blood group be tested for?
Agglutenation (IgM will agglutenate all non-self)
Recall the shelf lives and storage requirements of Red cells, FFP, platelets and cryoprecipitate
Red cells = 5 weeks at 4 degrees C
FFP = 2 years at -30 degrees C
Platelets = 5 days at 22 degrees C
Cryoprecipitate = 2 years at -30 degrees C
