DO: let the RN administer blood and blood products.
Do: use Only NS in conjunction with administration of blood and blood products.
Don’t: infuse any medication into the client via the blood IV tubing.
Do: read the product instructions because it states the maximum number of units that can be administered through a single filter.
Do: use a filter
Don’t forget to flush the line after transfusion of blood or blood products with 0.9% NS
Don’t: throw the tubing away in any trash bin.
Do: follow facility guidelines.
Do: document administration of blood transfusion according to hospital guidelines.
Do: administer blood within 30 mins of receiving the blood from the blood bank.
Don’t: forget to check the bag for abnormalities.
Do: obtain a prescription from the primary healthcare provider to administer blood or blood products.
Do: obtain an informed consent from the patient or family member.
Don’t: let the HPC forget to explain possible side effects and risks to the patient.
Do: administer the blood fusion slowly.
Don’t forget to observe 15 mins for adverse reactions. If there is no reaction you can increase the infusion rate.
