Blood Supply To The Heart And Neck Flashcards
What are the branches form the aorta
Brachiocephalic trunk
Left common carotid
Left subclavian artery
What are the branches of the branchiocephalic trunk
It here are 3 branches In relation to scalenus anterior muscle Medial to- 1 Posterior to- 2 Lateral to- 3 (@ edge of 1st rib)
What are the sub branches off of the 1st subclavian artery
3 branches
1st –> internal thoracic artery ( supply intercostal muscles)
2nd –> vertebral artery ( pass thro say and deep ,use,es of the neck and at c6 passes into transverse foraminae of vertebrae into the cranial cavity
3rd –> thyrocervical which branches again further up to the inferior thyroid artery
What does dos the common carotid do when bifurcated
Have internal inside carotid sheath and then an external go tocranialncavity
What supplies the brain with blood
Vertebral artery which goes thro the vertebrae
Had the internal carotid got o the cranium via the carotid canal
These form the circle of Willis
Where does the bifurcation of the common carotid occur
At level of thyroid cartilage
Why is the dilated part of the carotid sheath important
Carotid sinus which has barororeceptors which help maintain blood pressure
What is next to the carotid sinus
Carotid body which has lots of neurones nd chemoreceptors
What is the nerve supply to the carotid sinus and carotid body
The Glossopharyngeal cranial nerve 9
What are the branches form the external common carotid
8 branches Some anatomists like fires others prefer mashed spuds Superior thyroid Ascending pharyngeal Lingual Facial Occipital Posterior auricular Maxillary (terminal branch) Superficial temporal
What is the mechanism that drains the head and neck
Via superficial temporal vein which meets with the maxillary to form the retromandibilar vein which then splits into 2
These 2 branches - one joins with the auricular to form the posterior jugular the other joins with facial to form common facial vein
What is the dural venous sinus
Drains the cranial cavity
Superficial vein throu the pterygoid plexus
The facial vein doesn’t have valves
Keep in mind the danger triangle of the face
What are the contents of the carotid sheath
Internal common carotid artery
Internal jugular vein
Vagus nerve cranial nerve 10
Deep cervical lymph nodes
What is endocarditis
Infection in the cardiac valves
The origin by the dental origin – abscess release bacteria into blood which affects vulnerable valves
