Blood Supply To The Brain Flashcards
What are the two major divisions of the blood supply to the brain? What are the major arteries that supply them?
Anterior circulation- internal carotid artery
Posterior circulation- vertebral arteries.
What artery is formed by the verterbral arteries joining together over the surface of the pons?
The basilar artery. This gives rise to the pontine arteries.
Which other artery does the basilar artery give off apart from the pontine arteries?
The anterior inferior cerebellar arteries, and the superior cerebellar arteries.
Which two arteries arise just above the superior cerebellar arteries
The posterior cerebral arteries
Which artery connects the anterior and posterior circulations?
The posterior communicating artery
What is the middle cerebral artery a continuation of?
The internal carotid
What is the first branch of the ICA?
Opthalmic artery
What is the anterior cerebral artery a branch of?
The middle cerebral artery
What connects the two anterior cerebral arteries?
The anterior communicating artery
What parts of the brain does the anterior cerebral artery supply? Where does it run?
It runs over the surface of the corpus callosum and supplies the medial portions of the frontal and parietal lobes, as well as the frontal pole.
Which areas of the brain does the middle cerebral artery supply?
Lateral portions of frontal and parietal lobe, temporal lobe
Which areas of the brain does the posterior cerebral artery supply?
Occipital lobe and thalamus via thalamoperforator arteries
Which branch of the middle cerebral arteries supplies the internal capsule and the basal ganglia?
The lenticulostriate arteries
Which artery supplies the midbrain?
Superior cerebellar artery. Also supplies superior cerebellum (obviously)
Which artery supplies the medulla?
The posterior inferior cerebellar arteries. Also supplies inferior surface of cerebellum.
