Blood Supply To The Brain Flashcards
What does anterior cerebral artery supply
Medial surface of frontal lobe
ant 4/5ths of corpus callosum
Which arteries supply brain with blood
Pair of vertebral arteries (post)
Pair of internal carotid arteries (ant)
Occlusion of anterior cerebral artery
Leads to paralysis and sensory loss in contralateral leg and perineum
Middle cerebral arteries
Starts off as M1- supplying basal ganglia and striatum
Passes through lateral sulcus to supply the bulk of lateral surface of frontal and parietal lobes
Supplies brocas and wernickes areas
Occlusion of the middle cerebral artery
Paralysis and sensory loss of the contralateral face and arm
Brocas or wernikes aphasia if affecting dominant (usually left) side
Posterior cerebral artery
Curves around midbrain to reach medial surface of cerebral hemi
Cortical branches supply visual cortex (occipital lobe)
Supplies thalamus
Choroidal branches
Occlusion leads to blindness
Basilar artery
Runs forward in midline on ventral side of pons
Divides at rostral end of midbrain
Branches- ant inferior cerebellar, sup cerebellar, pontine
Occlusion of basilar artery
Leads to coma and death from respiratory failure
Blood supply to spinal cord
Supplies by ant and post spinal arteries (branches of vertebral arteries)
Supplemented by radicular arteries
Occlusion of spinal arteries
Fairly rare
Anterior cord syndrome
Symptoms vary on location (minor weakness to paraplegia)
How is blood drained from the brain
Venous drainage fro correx is via superior saggital sinus
This runs in the longitudinal fissure
Which then drains into transverse sinus
What drains into cavernous sinus
Optic, olfactory and some facial structures
What lies in the cavernous sinus
ICA
Cranial nerves 3,4 and 6
Maxillary and ophthalmic divisions of cranial nerve 5
Travel from cavernous sinus?
Can run in superior petrosal sinus to transverse sinus
Or through inferior petrosal straight to internal jugular vein
