Blood supply of anterior triangle Flashcards
Contains carotid system of arteries
Consisting of common carotid arteries and its terminal branches – Internal and external carotid artery
Common and external carotid = main arterial vessels in carotid triangle
Branches of the external carotid artery originate in the anterior triangle
Each common carotid artery ascends within the carotid sheath with the internal jugular vein and vagus nerve the level of the superior border of the thyroid cartilage
Here each common carotid artery terminates by splitting into external and internal carotid
Internal carotid artery has NO branches in the neck – and is a direct continuation of the common carotid artery
R common carotid begins at the bifurcation of the brachiocephalic trunk – the R subclavian artery is the other branch of this trunk
The L common carotid artery arises from the arch of the aorta –therefore has a short course in the superior mediastinum
External carotid artery supplies most structures external to the cranium and orbit and parts of the forehead and skull
