Blood Products and Their Uses Flashcards
What does fresh whole blood (<6 hr from donation) contain? (4) what are its indications for use?
contains:
1. RBCs
2. clotting factors
3. platelets
4. proteins
indications:
1. anemia for any reason, particularly due to hemorrhage or coagulopathy
-commonly used in LA and exotics where pRBCs are not available
what do pRBCs contains? indications for use?
contain: red cells
indications: anemia (not give clotting factors), good for patients with liver disease and those at risk of volume overload
what does fresh frozen plasma contain? indications for use?
contains:
1. clotting factors
2. proteins
indications:
1. primarily coagulopathy, DIC, anticoagulant rodenticide toxicity, SIRS/pancreatitis
2. could be used to treat low albumin
what does stored plasma (fridge up to 35d) contain? indications for use?
contains:
1. reduced amount of clotting factors
-NOT CONTAIN: V, VIII, vWF, platelets, or proteins)
indications:
1. anticoagulant rodenticide toxicity; great source of vitamin K dependent factors and plasma proteins
2. possibly low albumin (not efficiently)
what does platelet rich plasma contain? indications for use?
contains:
1. clotting factors
2. platelets
use:
-thrombocytopenia (not enough plts to significantly elevate count, not readily available, short shelf life)
-coagulopathy
what does platelet concentrate contain? use?
contains: concentrated platelets
use:
-thrombocytopenia with active life threatening hemorrhage
- presurgical in patients with low platelets
what does cryoprecipitate contain? uses?
contains:
1. vWF
2. factor VIII
3. fibrinogen
uses:
1. vWF disease: to treat bleeding or prevent bleeding if given presurgically
2. hemophilia A
3. hypofibrinogenemia
what do hemoglobin based oxygen carriers contain? uses?
contain: hemoglobin
uses:
1. anemia
2. hemorrhage
3. incompatible transfusions
4. when no RBCs available
5. shock
