blood processes Flashcards
what is hematopoiesis? where does it occur?
process of blood cell formation, in red bone marrow of adults
what are all formed elements derived from?
a common stem cell called hemocytoblast
hemocytoblasts differentiate into what that create what?
lymphoid stem cells, which create lymphocytes & myeloid stem cells (which create all other stem cells)
what are the stimulating factor for producing blood cells?
hormones
when a blood vessel is injured what begins the process of forming a blood clot (called hemostasis)
platelets
what are the 3 steps of the hemostasis process?
- blood vessels contract causing reduced blood loss at the wound
- platelets are chemically attracted to the wound & stick together
- injured tissues release tissue factor which interacts w/ the platelets causing thrombin production, thrombin + fibrinogen proteins= mesh formation
what is an abnormal clot formed w/ in a blood vessel called? what is it called when it dislodges & floats through the blood?
a thrombus, embolus
how does an abnormal clot affect the body?
restricts the flow of blood potentially leading to death, stroke, or a heart attack
