blood: formed elements pt. 2 Flashcards
what are the two categories of leukocytes? describe each
granulocytes (lobe shaped nuclei & visible granules), agranulocytes (spherical shaped nuclei & no visible granules)
what are examples of granulocytes?
basophil, neutrophil, eosinophil
what are examples of arganulocytes?
lymphocyte, monocyte
neutrophil function
destroy foreign bacteria, most common leukocyte & more are produced during an infection
eosinophil function
2 lobed nuclei, kill parasitic worms ingested in food & lessen allergic reactions
basophil function
release histamines
lymphocyte description
large, spherical nucleus, mostly found in lymph nodes, 2 types (t & b cells)
monocyte descrption & function
nucleus is kidney shaped, when monocytes leave the blood & enter surrounding tissues they become macrophages (attack viruses)
thromobcytes (platelets) are made of what and do what?
tiny fragments of other cells, clot the blood when a vessel is broken
