Why do we measure blood pressure?
It gives a good indicator of circulatory function in a person
What affects blood pressure?
The elasticity of arteries, and the pumping power of the heart, which can deteriorate with age or certain illnesses or lack of excercise
What two things are checked when measuring blood pressure?
Higher blood pressure measurement during contraction (systole) and lower measurement during (relaxation) diastole
What name is given to high blood pressure?
Hypertension
What name is given to low blood pressure and what can this result in?
Hypotension. Resulting in poor circulation and cold hands and feet
What is the most common way to take a pulse and how do you measure it?
Over the radial artery in the wrist. Take the pulse for 15 seconds and multiply by 4 to get the bpm
