Blood Pressure Flashcards
What are systolic and diastolic blood pressure?
Systolic = heart contracting Diastolic = heart relaxing
What is the “pulse pressure”?
The difference between systolic and diastolic pressures
What is prehypertension?
A systolic BP of 120-139 mmHg or a diastolic BP of 80-89 mmHg
What is stage 1 hypertension?
A systolic BP of 140-159 mmHg or a diastolic BP of 90-99 mmHg
What is stage 2 hypertension?
A systolic BP equal to or greater than 160 mmHg or a diastolic BP equal to or greater than 100 mmHg
What are the three classifications of hypertension?
Prehypertension
Stage 1
Stage 2
How should orthostatic vital sign measurements be obtained?
Check BP and pulse with client supine, sitting, and standing. Readings are obtained 1-3 minutes after patient changes position.
What are some factors that can increase BP?
- BP tends to increase as the aging process progresses
- Stress
- African American descent is a risk factor
What are some factors that can decrease BP?
Antihypertensive medications and opioids
BP is lowest in the morning
What two activities can yield falsely high BP readings?
Smoking and exercise
