Blood pressure Flashcards
What is blood pressure?
The force exerted by blood against the arterial walls during a cardiac cycle which consists of a heart muscle contraction and heart muscle relaxation.
What is normal systolic pressure in an adult?
Varies between 110-140-mm Hg
What is normal diastolic pressure in an adult?
Varies between 60-90-mm Hg
What does diastolic mean?
Diastole is the relaxed phase of the cardiac cycle when the chambers of the heart are re-filling with blood
What does systolic mean?
Systole is the part of the cardiac cycle during which some chambers of the heart contract after refilling with blood.
What is the resting rate for an adult?
Between 70-90 beat per minute (bpm)
What does the term tachycardia mean?
Rapid heart rate over 100 bpm
What does the term bradycardia mean?
Slow heart rate less than 50 bpm
