Blood - Part 1 Flashcards
How much blood is the avg. body?
10 pints (4.7 - 5.0 liters)
What is one unit of blood?
450 - 500 ccs (~1 pint)
What % of body weight is from blood?
7-8%
What are the critical functions of blood?
1) transport oxygen / nutrients to cells 2) rid the body of CO2 and other waste 3) vital to immune system 4) maintain constant body temp
What is the purpose of artificial blood?
Only to transport oxygen & CO2 (doesn’t do other things)
What are the components of blood?
Red Blood Cells, White Blood Cells, Platlets, Plasma
What are the medical names for RBC, WBC, and platelets?
Erythrocytes, Leukocytes, Thrombocytes
RBC or Erythrocytes… Primary Role, % of total blood,
- Primary role: transport oxygen from lungs to all living tissue and carry away CO2 - 40 - 50% total blood
RBC… lifespan, what organ removes them, where made, how many made per second
- 120 day lifespan - removed by spleen - made in bone marrow from stem cells - 2-3 million / sec made
What is Erythropoietin?
Glycoprotien made in kidneys, controls RBC production
How long does Erythropoiesis take?
7 - 14 days
What is the synthetic process of RBC production called?
Epoetin Alfa
How long can RBC be stored?
42 days
WBC or Leukocytes… Primary Role, % of total blood
- Protect the body from invasion of foreign substances, critically involved in controlling inflammation - < 1% of total blood
Where are WBC produced?
Mostly in marrow
