Blood glucose regulation Flashcards
what is a hormone?
hormone are chemicals secreted by glands that act as messengers
why do target cells only respond to specific hormones?
because target body cells have receptors that recognized and bind to specific hormones
target tissue for insulin
liver and fat, helps the uptake of glucose via glut 4 and help regulate blood glucose levels
target tissue for glucagon
liver- liver stimulates the breakdown of glyocon back into glucose so it can be used to increase blood sugar
write out the stimulus model for blood glucose rising
RISING BLOOD GLUCOSE- BETA CELLS (INSULIN)- LIVER CELLS AND FAT CELLS UPTAKE OF GLUCOSE- DECREASE IN BLOOD GLUCOSE-
Write out the stimulus response model for dropping glucose levels
drop in blood glucose- alpha cells (glucagon) - liver cells break down glycogen into usable glucose - increase in blood glucose levels
why does type 1 diabetes result in high blood glucose levels
in type one diabetes there is a lack of insulin in the body, due to autoimmunity, body attacks beta cells that make insulin, which is in charge of dropping glucose levels and allows glucose to enter the body
explain symptoms of type 1 diabetes
excessive urination- body pees out excess glucose
fatigue- body is cannot uptake glucose to make atp / enegry
increased thirst- over urination
weight loss- low energy, not feeling hungry
strats that help achieve lower glucose levels
more frequent smaller meals, count carbs, check insulin dosage and exercise
write the chemical equation for photosynthesis
6CO2 + 6H20 - CHLORYPHYL AND LIGHT + C6 H12 06 + 602
