Blood Glucose Regulation Flashcards
What role does the pancreas have in blood glucose regulation?
Following an increase or decrease in blood glucose, the pancreas will detect the change and follow with glucagon or insulin secretion
What does insulin do?
Insulin lowers blood glucose levels, by stimulating the live to turn glucose to glycogen through glycogenesis
AND by stimulating skeletal and fat muscles to absorb more glucose from the blood (either forms FA for long term storage or undergoes cellular respiration)
What does glucagon do?
Glucagon raises blood glucose levels. Stimulates liver to break down glycogen into glucose through glycogenolysis
What are the normal blood glucose levels?
4 - 7.8 mmol/L
Below = Hypoglycaemia
Above= Hyperglycaemia
What are symptoms of diabetes?
Increased urination, presence of glucose in urine, and increased thirst
How do the above symptoms arise?
Increased urination - Kidney are overwhelmed and attempting to excess water
Presence of glucose in urine - ketone bodies excreted
Feeling of thirst - Lack of fluids causes brain to release ADH which signals a feeling of thirst
