Blood glucose concentration Flashcards
What organs control blood glucose concentration?
The pancreas and liver.
What does insulin do?
Decreases blood glucose concentration.
What does glucagon do?
Increases blood glucose concentration.
What happens when blood glucose concentration increases?
The pancrease secretes insulin into the blood. Insulin reaches the liver and causes it to absorb more glucose from the blood.
What happens to the glucose absorbed by the liver?
Some is converted into glycogen(insoluble polysaccharide) and stored in the liver. Some is used in respiration
What happens when blood glucose decreases?
Pancrease secretes glucagon into the blood. When glucagon reaches the liver, liver cells break down glycogen to glucose and release it into the blood.
