Blood Formation Flashcards
Marrow Cavity (Meduallary Cavity)
The hollow space inside our bones; babies only have red marrow cavities
Red Bone Marrow
Working marrow cavities filled with blood-forming cells
Yellow Bone Marrow
Fatty marrow; replaces red bone marrow
Where is red bone marrow mainly found in adults
Pelvic Girdle, Sternum, Vertebrae, Ends of long bones (femurs)
Define Hemopoiesis/Hematopoiesis
The formation of the blood cells & their components
Hem(o)-/Hemat(o)-
-poiesis
Blood
Formation
Hemocytoblast
All blood cells derive from a common stem cell
Blood Stem Cells
Can self-renew or produce different specialized cells like: RBC’s, WBC’s & platelets
Define Erythropoiesis
RBC formation in the bone marrow
Define Leukpoiesis
WBC formation in the bone marrow
Define Thrombopoiesis
Platelet fomration in the bone marrow
Erythopoietin (EPO)
Hormone that influences the development in RBC’s; direct influence on our red bone marrow; increase in immature RBC’s within 1-2 days.
Reticulotcyte
An immature RBC; released into the bloodstream where they develop into mature RBC’s within 24-36 hours
Blood Doping
Sometimes EPO is used illegally as a performance-enhancing drug
Iron
It helps to form the protein molecule Hemoglobin inside the RBC
