‘Biconcave’ shape
This shape aids in a red blood cells ability to manoeuvre through tiny blood vessels to deliver oxygen to organs and tissues
How are red blood cells produced?
Derived from red bone marrow - found in red bone marrow tissue, ( in flat bones such as skull, hip bones, ribs, shoulder blades etc)
What is the scientific name for Platelets?
Thrombocytes
What is the function of platelets ?
Clots blood
Repairs small blood vessels and prevents major blood loss
What is the function of plasma ?
Carrying the white blood cells , platelets and red blood cells.
What percentage of the blood volume is plasma?
Average - 55%
What are the 5 different types of white blood cell?
- Neutrophils
- basophils
- eosinophils
- monocytes
- lymphocytes
What is the function of a white blood cell ?
Help fight infections by attacking bacteria , viruses and germs that invade the body. White blood cells are a major part of the immune system
Where do white blood cells develop ?
In bone marrow from stem cells
