Blood composition Flashcards
What are the 5 functions of blood?
Transports dissolved gasses, nutrients, hormones, and metabolic wastes.
Regulates concentration of hydrogen ions in our body.
Slow’s down fluid loss at sites where there is injury.
Defends against pathogens and toxins.
Stabilises body temperature.
How much weight does whole blood weigh on average in adults?
4-6 litres making up around 8 percent in body.
What is blood temperature measured at?
38 degrees
What are the 2 components of whole blood?
Plasma.
Formed elements.
What are the attributes of Plasma?
Liquid (water) part.
See through.
What are the attributes of formed elements?
Red and white blood cells.
Cell fragments (platelets)
What is the difference between plasma and serum?
Serum is plasma without the blood clotting elements.
What are the 4 proteins associated with whole blood?
Albumins.
Globulins.
Fibrinogen.
Prothrombin.
What are the 5 other solutes associated with whole blood?
Ions -sodium potassium and calcium.
Nutrients - glucose
Waste products -urea
Gases -oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen.
Regulatory substances- hormones
What do albumins do?
Help maintain osmotic pressure of blood.
What do globulins do?
Essential for fighting infections.
What do fibrinogens do?
They convert to fibrin during coagulation.
What do prothrombins do?
They convert to thrombin during coagulation.
