Blood Circulation Flashcards
Blood flows:
In a circuitous route throughout the body.
Blood vessels:
Subdivided into two circuits (pulmonary and systemic) together with 4 chambers of the heart, form the closed system for the flow of blood.
Pulmonary Circulation:
Phase of circulation in which blood is pumped through lungs to eliminate waste (particularly CO2) and pick up O2, is the pulmonary circulation.
Blood is pumped:
Out of the heart into the lungs by the right ventricle.
Pulmonary circulation:
Blood is pumped out of heart and into the lungs by right ventricle. It enters pulmonary artery (only artery that carries deoxygenated blood), and continues to capillaries in the lungs. Here, CO2 is exchanged for O2. Small veins collect oxygenated blood from the capillaries. These veins combine into 4 pulmonary veins, which pour oxygenated blood into the left atrium of the heart. (These veins are the only veins carrying oxygenated blood) from here, blood is pumped to rest of body (systemic circulation).
