What is Mr Lyons talking about when he mentions the ‘shrinking pound’?
The economic recession in the later 1960s. There was a decline in the commonly and people stopped earning earning and spending as much money.
Which industries were affected by the economic recession?
Ship building and coal mining. Lots of working class men were employed by these, so lots lost their job.
What did Margaret Thatcher do?
She closed the traditional industry because she didn’t think they made profit
What is a new town?
The government redeveloped lots of towns nearby cities where they could rent houses.
What was Skemersdale?
A New Town where Mrs J goes to live. Houses were newly built and were cleaner. Also there was more open space than a city.
Did the class divide stop in Skemersdale?
The division still existed. The working class would live together in ‘estates’.
What were working class houses like in the city?
Small and overcrowded, all council houses. No heating, no indoor toilets, no garden. Constructed cheaply after WW2.
What were middle class houses and lives like?
Housing was large and they had bigger gardens. They would lie in better areas with more opportunities.
What did the council do in the 1960s to help the housing problem?
They created more New Towns and moved council homes from the city to put in the country.
