Blood and nerve supply to the shoulder region Flashcards

1
Q

What is the blood supply to the shoulder region?

A

Rich blood supply

Q

Outline the scapula anastomosis

A

Subclavian -> thyrocervical trunk -> suprascapular anastomosis with axillary branches.
Subscapular branches + dorsal scapular anastomoses with branches from suprascapular.

Q

What is the nerve supply to the shoulder?

A

Brachial plexus -> suprascapular nerve -> supraspinatus + infraspinatus.
Posterior cord:
upper/lower subscapular nerves -> subscapularis, teres major.
thoracodorsal nerve -> latissimus dorsi.
terminates as: radial -> triceps brachi,
axillary -> deltoid + teres minor

Q

What is the clinical significance of the quadrangular space?

A

Fracture of surgical neck can damage nerve + vessel -> can prevent abduction
