Q

What is the structure of erythrocytes?

A
  • biconcave
  • very flexible so they can fit through small capillaries
  • membrane is made of glycolipids
  • have no nucleus or organelles

9
Q

What is the red blood cell cycle?

A
  • start as a pluripotent stem cell - a proerythroblast
  • following synthesis of Hb, nucleus is expelled leaving a reticulocyte
  • the reticulocyte leaves the bone marrow and matures in 1-2 days, forming an erythrocyte

Q

What is the structure of a leukocyte?

A

Leukocytes have a nucleus and plasma membranes, which have proteins. MHC antigens are used for immunological purposes.

Q

What are the two classifications of leukocytes?

A
  1. Granular - eosinophils, basophils, neutrophils

2. Agranular - lymphocytes and monocytes that develop to macrophages

16
Q

How are thrombocytes formed?

A

Thrombocytes are formed from megakaryocytes under the influence of thrombopoeitin, in the red bone marrow.

17
Q

What is the structure of thrombocytes?

A

They are disc shaped. They have no nucleus but many vesicles.

18
Q

How long do thrombocytes live?

A

Around 5-9 days.

19
Q

What is the function of thrombocytes?

A

Thrombocytes play a huge role in blood clotting and vascular homeostasis.

20
Q

What determines a blood group?

A

Red blood cells have a pre-determined coating of glycoproteins / glycolipids which act as antigens and determine grouping.

21
Q

How many blood groups and surface antigens are there?

A

There are around 24 blood groups and 100 types of surface antigens.
