Blood Flashcards
Blood is a ________ consisting of plasma, in which ______ blood cells, ________ blood cells and _________ are suspended
Tissue
Red
White
Platelets
What is the function of red blood cells?
To carry oxygen around the body
What is the function of white blood cells?
To fight diseases by invading microbes
What is the function of platelets?
Blood clotting.
They make fibres that form a net at the site of a cut. Red blood cells get trapped in the net to form a clot. The clot dries to form a scab
What is the function of plasma?
Plasma transports dissolved substances around the body, including:
-Hormones
-Nutrients, such as water, glucose, amino acids, minerals and vitamins
-Waste substances, such as carbon dioxide and urea
Red and white blood cells and platelets
How have red blood cells adapted to their function?
They are smaller than white blood cells
They have no nucleus so they can carry more haemoglobin
Biconcave shape-maximise surface area for oxygen absorption
How have white blood cells adapted to their function?
Can change shape
