Q

Red blood cells

A
  • Cannot reproduce and have no nucleus - gives more space to pack in haemoglobin
  • The cells are biconcave discs. Gives a larger surface area;volume ratio for the diffusion of oxygen
  • 50 for each white blood cell

Q

What is haemoglobin and how does it work?

A
  • Large protein molecule folded around four iron atoms
  • In high oxygen concentrations, reacts with oxygen and forms OXYHEMOGLOBIN
  • In low oxygen concentrations, the reaction reverses to give HAEMOGLOBIN and OXYGEN K
