Blood Flashcards
What type of tissue is blood
Connective tissue
Define Hematocrit
Is a measures the percentage of the volume of the whole blood that is made up of red blood cells
What is found in plasma
Nutrients, Salts, Respiratory gases (O2 CO2), Hormones, Plasma proteins and waste products
Name formed blood elements
Erythrocytes, Leukocytes, and Thrombocytes
List two factors that lead to anemia
1) abnormally shaped hemoglobin
2) in the oxygen-carrying ability of the blood
What do Myeloid cells produce?
Erythrocytes, Platelets, Monocytes, Neutrophils, Eosinophils, Basophils
What is Leukemia?
Bone marrow cancer leading to overproduction of dysfunctional WBCs
What is Leukocytes?
Crucial in the body’s defence against disease
What is Polycythemia?
Is an excessive or abnormal increase in the number of erythrocytes
What are two groups of Leukocytes?
Granulocytes and Agranulocytosis
What is the function of Platelets?
Derived from ruptured multinucleate cells and are needed for hemostasis
Define diapedesis
The passage of blood cells through the intact walls of the capillaries, typically accompanying inflammation
Define chemotaxis
Movement of a motile cell or part of one in a direction corresponding to a gradient of increasing or decreasing concentration of a particular substance
