What is blood made up of?
A
- 55% plasma
- 45% red blood cells
- <1% white blood cells
- < 1% platelets

How are red blood cells made? Erythropoiesis
A
Starts in bone marrow as pluripotent stem all, which then differentiates into eryth roblast. Haemoglobin is made and nucleus removed (reticulocyte). Which then matures after leaving bone marrow to form erythrocyte.

- Nave a nucleus
- combat infection by phagocytosis or by immune response
- can leave blood stream to deal with invading pathogens

A
- Formed from megakaryocytes
- disc shaped
- no nucleus
- life span 5-9 days

A
Categorised by presence or absence of antigens on surface cell
A, B, AB (can transfuse with any type of blood), O (can be donated to anyone)

Rhesus incompatibility
A
If mother is Rh- and fetes is rh+, mother requires anti D. Will attack the foetal erythrocytes carrying D surface antigen
