Blood Flashcards
What are the Functions of Blood?
Transport: Nutrients, Respiratory gases, Wastes, Hormones, Temp reg
Acid-base balance
Protection: WBC and plasma proteins
What does Blood contains?
ECF: Plasma
ICF: Fluid inside the blood cells
What percentage of Body Mass Blood accounts for?
7%
Name Blood Volume Terminology
Normovolemia
Hypovolemia
Hypervolemia
Normal value of Hematocrit (Ht) and formula?
45%
Ht = Height of Red Blood Column/Height of whole blood column x 100
In a normal Ht value, what is the blood volume in a 70kg malle if we know it’s 7% Body Weight?
Blood volume: 2.25L
Volume occupied by RBC: 2.25L
Volume occupied by Plasma: 2.75L
What is the composition of Plasma?
H2O: 90%
Ions: Mainly Na+ and Cl-
Nutrients, Respiratory gasses, Wastes
Proteins: 7%, Albumins, Globulins and Fibrinogen
How can we separate Plasma Proteins?
By using Electrophoresis
How does Electrophoresis work?
By applying a current through a drop of plasma:
- The rate of migration is influenced by the number, the distribution of charges and by the M.W of each protein
When does Plasma becomes Serum?
When fibrinogen is absent.
Where are the Plasma Proteins synthesized?
Liver: Albumin, Fibrinogen, Globulin (a1,a2,b)
Lymphoid Tissue: Gamma Globulin
What happens to Plasma Proteins in case of Renal Disease?
The Plasma Protein level decreases (Albumin, since small–>goes through liver)
What happens to Plasma Proteins in case of bacteria infection?
The immune response induce a spike in gamma globulins.
