Blood Flashcards
Composed of two parts
- Plasma: water, gasses, nutrients and waste 55%
- Formed portion: Red Blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets 45%
Where are blood cells and platelets produced
Bone marrow
Red blood cells
Also called erythrocytes, specialized for oxygen transport
Hemoglobin
Respiratory pigment that transports oxygen and some carbon dioxide
Anemia
Either too few red blood cells or too little hemoglobin
- results in less oxygen being transported
- may be caused by an iron deficiency
White blood cells
Leukocytes or Leucocytes, part of immune response, 1. Granulocytes 2. Monocytes 3. Lymphocytes
Leukaemia
Cancer of white blood cells
Platelets
Fragments of cells that form when larger cells in the bone marrow break apart
Key role in blood clotting
- Injury triggers enzyme reactions that attract platelets
- If calcium is present prothrombin is changed to thrombin
- Thrombin and calcium convert firbrinogen to fibrin
Fibrin
Thread like material that creates a mesh which traps blood and forms a clot
Hemophilia
The blood will not clot
- caused by missing blood clotting proteins
